Is Africa Platform just an organisation?
No.
Organizations work on programs, on focus areas. Organizations focus on building their brand and visibility. Organizations work with constituencies. Organizations constantly battle between being seen as special interest groups, or as legitimate actors for the overall good of society. Organizations constantly balance the demands of those who fund them with the legitimate needs it communicates to society.
The Africa Platform does not have to worry about this. We focus on The Social Contract, the foundation of any Governance or Democratic Agenda. We work discreetly, building relations that bring change rather than relying on big branding to push for change. The society and country actors in the places we work are the ones who decide the form of social contract building process they want. And they are the ones who create the coalitions that advance this agenda. They even decide who we should work with. If they need activists , we will help them identify and strengthen their capacity, power and voice. If they want local NGOs, we help them get the best change actors. If they need a global Platform, we take them there. IF we can’t we will ensure their voice reaches these platforms. We seek independent funding that is not tied to any project or any specific delivery that is not decided by community. And we do not spend the money… the society does.
