At the heart of any Democracy is a Social Contract, an agreement between societies that it shall be governed through a set of systems and processes that ensure its collective aspirations, while respecting the voice of society at all times. Its society, not the state or Political system, that shapes development.
I. Strengthening Relations with Society
Businesses are not just the engines of Economic Growth and wealth creation, they are also the drivers of stability, or lack of it. The Africa Platform works on three areas:
Business and Wealth Distribution
We work to ensure Businesses are true creators of collective wealth, a capitalism that is conscious and delivers a shared value, not just extracting resources from society.
Business and Politics
We work to ensure Businesses shape Politics in ways that create an enabling environment for all, without corrupting weak political systems to exploit society.
Business and Wealth Extraction
The Africa Platform works to ensure businesses are a benefit to society, not extractors from society wealth.
Society shapes the government needed to ensure democracy. The Africa Platform works with governments to build the right democracy built on local values, social cohesion and effective accountability at all levels of Governance. Diverse societies have different forms of democratic values. The Africa Platform works with Governments to build the right democracy that respects its diversity, culture and social cohesion. Elections, where they are needed, are only the first step to democracy, and not always, the only one, or necessary one.
Society cohesion is the foundation of any Democracy. The Africa Platform works with activists, and leaders in society to strengthen relations within society and ensure issues within society become the foundation of policy at all levels.
Development sector- NGOs and the Donors that fund them- can become catalysts for societal cohesion, or become stumbling blocks to society resilience, cohesion and accountability. The Africa Platform works with development actors to ensure development is not a tool to weaken society so as to extract from it.
II. Strengthening State Legitimacy
Rebuilding the Social Contract
At the heart of any Democracy is a Social Contract, an agreement between societies that it shall be governed through a set of systems and processes that ensure its collective aspirations, while respecting the voice of society at all times. Its society, not the state or Political system, that shapes development.
